Symptoms of Listeria Poisoning
The CDC has reported illnesses caused by the Jensen cantaloupes in Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Colorado has the most illnesses with 30, while Texas has 14 and New Mexico has 13.
What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of listeriosis are much like the common flu, including:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Nausea or diarrhea
If infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms such as headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, or convulsions may be evident. Infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness.
Listeriosis is usually diagnosed by discovering that a person has ingested food suspected of listeria-contamination, such as the Jensen Farms cantaloupe. Definitive diagnosis is achieved by identifying the listeria bacteria are isolated from the patient's blood, cerebral spinal fluid, or other body fluid.
